Saskatchewan’s First

File Hills First Nations Police Service became the first Stand-Alone First Nations Police Service in Saskatchewan with their official signing ceremony held on the Okanese First Nation, on May 25th, 2000.  Elder Gilbert Starr Sr.  and members of the Police Service observe the Agreement signing.

File Hills First Nation Police Service is dedicated to providing quality services to the communities it polices based on a community policing model.

The emphasis is to incorporate a culturally sensitive police service that reflects the traditional practices of the First Nations while working in conjunction with other established police services to ensure that quality policing is ongoing.

With culturally sensitive policing, we have the strength to incorporate a more effective and proactive community policing strategy.

FILE HILLS FIRST NATIONS POLICE SERVICE ESTABLISHED

Saskatchewan's first self-administered First Nations police agency was formally established on May 25, 2000, with a ceremonial signing.

The policing agreement was signed by Saskatchewan Justice, Public Safety and Emergency Preparedness Canada, the File Hills Board of Police Commissioners and the Chiefs representing the Bands of Okanese, Little Black Bear, Carry the Kettle, Star Blanket and Peepeekisis First Nations.

The budget for the File Hills First Nations Police Service is almost $968,200, which is cost-shared by the federal government and the Government of Saskatchewan.

The signing ceremony was part of Okanese, Little Black Bear and Star Blanket First Nations Treaty Day celebrations.

The transition toward a self-administered File Hills First Nations Police Service began in 1993. At that time, the federal and provincial governments and the Federation of Saskatchewan Indian Nations signed an agreement for the policing of First Nations in Saskatchewan, which provides First Nations with options on how they are policed.
